SEO and GEO: what's the difference?
SEO helps search engines find your company. GEO helps AI systems understand, trust and reference your company.
Traditional search returns a list of links. AI search increasingly returns an answer, assembled from sources the system considers reliable, with a handful of links attached. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity all work this way. If your business is not one of the sources, you may not appear at all.
The good news: GEO is built on SEO, not instead of it. Google's own guidance on AI features in Search says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. The fundamentals carry over. What changes is how much clarity, structure and trust signals matter. We go deeper in SEO vs. GEO.
Entities, schema and trust
AI systems reason about entities: a specific business, at a specific address, offering specific services, run by specific people. If your name, address, services and description vary across your site, your Business Profile and directories, the system has less confidence about who you are.
We make your entity consistent everywhere it appears. On the site, we add Schema.org structured data such as Organization or LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage where the content supports it, always matching what is visible on the page. Schema does not force a citation. It removes ambiguity, which is the point. More on this in how schema helps search engines.
Off the site, we build citations and earn brand mentions in credible places: industry associations, local organizations, publications and partners. Consistent third-party references are part of how any system, human or machine, decides a business is real and reputable.
Content written to be quoted
AI answers favor content that states things clearly. We write service pages and articles that:
- Open sections with a direct, one-sentence answer, then explain.
- Use question-style headings that match how people actually ask.
- Define terms plainly, with specific facts rather than adjectives.
- Cover a topic in depth across related pages, building topical authority instead of one thin page per keyword.
- Cite primary sources when stating third-party facts.
This is also simply better writing for human readers. Clear beats clever, for both audiences.
Local signals still count
When someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation in a specific city, the answer often draws on the same local information Google Search uses: Business Profiles, reviews, location pages and consistent directory listings. A business with a complete profile, genuine reviews and clear service-area pages gives AI systems more to work with. Our local SEO work feeds directly into GEO.
AI-readable architecture and crawler access
AI systems cannot cite what they cannot read. Our hand-coded static sites deliver complete HTML on the first request, with no heavy JavaScript needed to see the content, a clean heading structure and fast load times.
Crawler access is a deliberate decision, and the names matter:
- OAI-SearchBot is the crawler OpenAI uses to surface sites in ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
- GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it is a training decision, separate from search visibility. (OpenAI crawler documentation)
- Google-Extended controls whether your content may be used for training and grounding Gemini models. Google states it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Search and are crawled by Googlebot. (Google crawler documentation)
- PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity search. (Perplexity crawler documentation)
We review your robots.txt, firewall and CDN settings so search-facing AI crawlers are not blocked by accident, and we help you decide what to allow for model training.
What we can and can't promise
No one can guarantee that an AI system will cite your business. These systems change often, answers vary by query and user, and providers do not publish ranking rules for citations. Anyone selling guaranteed ChatGPT placement is guessing.
What we can do is make your business the clearest, most consistent and best-documented option in your market, then monitor how AI tools describe you for the questions that matter and adjust. Results vary by market, competition, budget and campaign. For the bigger picture, read how AI is changing local search and will ChatGPT replace Google? Then request a free AI-visibility audit.
