SEO (search engine optimization) works to rank your pages in search results so people click through. GEO (generative engine optimization) works to get your business cited, quoted or recommended inside AI-generated answers from tools like Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. GEO is built on top of SEO, not instead of it.
Key takeaways
- SEO targets rankings and clicks; GEO targets citations and mentions inside AI answers.
- Google says no special optimization is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- GEO adds work SEO often skips: answer-first writing, entity consistency, and making sure AI crawlers can reach you.
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search answers.
- Measure GEO differently: track whether you are named, not just where you rank.
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO is the discipline of earning a high position in a list of search results. The goal is the click. You win when someone sees your title, chooses it, and lands on your site.
GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the discipline of being included in an answer that an AI system writes. The goal is the mention. You win when Google's AI Overview, AI Mode, ChatGPT or a similar tool names your business, quotes your page, or links to you as a source.
The term comes from a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by researchers at Princeton and collaborators, which tested how content changes affected visibility in AI-generated responses. It is a young field. Treat anyone selling certainty about it with caution.
Here is the short version:
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you show up | Ranked list of links | Inside a written AI answer |
| What you win | A click | A citation, mention or recommendation |
| Unit of competition | A page | A passage, a fact, an entity |
| Main measurement | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Share of mentions, cited sources, referral visits |
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. And anyone who tells you to stop doing SEO so you can "do GEO" is selling you a rebrand.
Google is explicit about this. Its documentation on AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations necessary. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. That is SEO's job.
The same documentation explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, running multiple related searches across subtopics to assemble an answer. In practice, that means the pages that already rank well for a cluster of related questions are the ones most likely to be pulled in.
Outside Google, the picture is similar. OpenAI's ChatGPT search help article says ChatGPT rewrites a question into targeted queries and sends them to third-party search providers. If you are invisible in traditional search, you have fewer chances to be retrieved by AI search.
So GEO sits on top of SEO. It is a layer, not a replacement.
What GEO adds that traditional SEO often misses
If the foundation is shared, where is the difference in practice? In our experience, it is in four habits that many SEO programs never built.
1. Answer-first writing
AI systems lift passages, not pages. A page that buries the answer under three paragraphs of preamble gives a model nothing clean to quote. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under a heading that matches the question. Then expand.
2. Entity consistency
An AI answer about "the best roofer in Fort Lauderdale" is assembled from what the web says about businesses, not just what your homepage says about you. Your name, address, phone, services and service area should match across your site, your Google Business Profile, and the directories and publications that mention you. Contradictions make you harder to recommend with confidence.
3. Crawler access
Some sites block AI crawlers by accident through a CDN rule or a copy-pasted robots.txt. OpenAI's crawler documentation separates two bots: OAI-SearchBot, which surfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features, and GPTBot, which crawls content that may be used to train models. Block OAI-SearchBot and your pages will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. You can allow one and block the other. Make that a deliberate choice.
4. Proof that can be quoted
Specific, verifiable facts travel. Pricing ranges, service lists, process steps, licensing details, years in business. Vague claims like "industry-leading quality" do not get cited because there is nothing to cite.
Where SEO and GEO are exactly the same
A lot of "GEO advice" is SEO advice with a new label. That is fine, as long as you know it.
- Crawlability and indexing. If search engines cannot reach and index the page, no AI layer built on them will use it.
- Helpful, original content. Google's guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content applies to both. Thin pages rewritten from competitors help neither.
- Structured data. Schema markup helps machines understand what a page is about. It is not a magic GEO switch, but it removes ambiguity. We go deeper in how schema helps search engines.
- Authority. Links, mentions and reviews from real sources still signal that a business is legitimate.
If your SEO is weak, start there. GEO work on a site that does not rank is decoration.
How to measure GEO when there is no ranking report
This is where the two disciplines genuinely diverge. SEO has mature tools: rank trackers, Search Console, analytics. GEO measurement is still rough.
Google includes clicks and impressions from AI features inside the overall Search Console Performance report, according to its AI features documentation. In June 2026 Google also introduced Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console, which start to show how your pages appear in its AI experiences. They are new and still rolling out, and they cover Google only, so they do not tell the whole GEO story.
What we track instead:
- A fixed prompt set. Twenty to fifty real questions your customers ask, run monthly across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and other assistants your market uses. Record whether you are named, cited or absent.
- Referral traffic from AI tools. Visits from chatgpt.com and similar sources show up in analytics as referrals. They are small for most businesses today, but the trend matters.
- Branded search growth. When AI tools recommend you without a link, people often search your name afterward. Rising branded queries are a useful indirect signal.
- Conversion quality. Leads who arrive after an AI tool has already shortlisted you tend to be further along. Ask new customers how they found you.
None of this is as precise as a rank tracker. Be honest with yourself about that.
Which should a business invest in first?
Our opinion: fix SEO first, then layer GEO on top, then keep both running as one program.
The order matters because the dependencies run one way. Strong SEO raises your odds of being retrieved by AI search. Strong GEO formatting on a page nobody can find changes very little.
For most service businesses, that looks like this:
- Technical health and indexing (our SEO service starts here).
- A complete, accurate Google Business Profile and consistent citations, especially for local businesses (see local SEO).
- Service pages rewritten answer-first, with specifics a model can quote.
- Crawler access reviewed and a monthly AI-visibility check in place (this is the core of our GEO and AI search optimization work).
Results vary by market, competition, budget and campaign. Nobody can guarantee an AI system will mention you, and anyone who does is guessing. What you can do is make your business the easiest one to understand, verify and quote.

Frequently asked questions
Is GEO just a new name for SEO?
Partly. Most of the foundation is shared: crawlability, helpful content, structured data and authority. GEO adds a focus on answer-first passages, entity consistency across the web, AI crawler access and measuring mentions inside AI answers rather than rankings.
Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet.
Should I block AI crawlers?
It depends on your goals. With OpenAI, OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search results and GPTBot gathers training data. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search answers. You can allow one and block the other.
How long does GEO take to work?
There is no reliable benchmark yet. Because AI search relies heavily on existing search indexes, GEO tends to move at the pace of your underlying SEO. Track a fixed set of prompts monthly to see whether your business starts appearing.
